Every day your face is exposed to pollution, toxins, and sun damage causing the top layer of skin to appear dry and dull and enhancing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. A dermaplaning facial is an exfoliation treatment that removes the dead cells on the outer layer of skin to reveal the fresh new skin cells beneath.
Unlike the common dermabrasion used for exfoliation, dermaplaning uses a medical-grade scalpel called a dermatome to gently slough away dead cells. In this article, we’ll explain how a dermaplane facial works, the benefits, and what you can expect in terms of discomfort and downtime.
What is a Dermaplaning Facial?
A
dermaplane facial removes dirt and dead skin cells which stimulates the growth of new skin cells. As an added benefit, it also removes the fine vellus hairs often referred to as peach fuzz leaving you with ultra-smooth facial skin.
The tool used for a dermaplane facial looks like a razor, and the procedure is similar to shaving. You’ll be seated in a reclining chair during the treatment, which typically lasts about 30 minutes. The technician will remove any makeup you’re wearing and thoroughly cleanse your skin. The sterile blade is held at a 45-degree angle and is slowly grazed across the skin.
How Does it Work?
When the dermaplane tool is applied to remove dead skin cells and peach fuzz, you’ll feel a light scraping sensation. The description sounds worse than the procedure which should be pain-free and some even describe it as relaxing.
The technician will work around the face, from the forehead down to just under the jawline, where there often is the most hair. Afterward, a soothing skin agent such as aloe is applied to the face.
What are the Benefits?
Getting rid of dead skin cells and encouraging the development of new ones, is the primary benefit of a dermaplaning facial. The rejuvenating effect on the skin evens out hyperpigmentation, smooths rough spots, and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful complexion.
A dermaplane facial also eliminates vellus hairs. On some people, these hairs are quite dark and visible but even when they’re fine and less obvious, removal creates softer skin. Foundation and powder application will also be smoother when the hair is eliminated.
Another benefit of a dermaplaning facial is that it enhances the absorption and efficacy of skincare products. The removal of dead skins cells makes it easier for them to penetrate the skin’s surface.
Does it Hurt?
A dermaplane facial may feel tingly during the procedure but most people have little to no irritation during the treatment. After the procedure, you may notice redness and minor swelling but the effects should disappear within 48 hours. A dermaplane facial is not recommended if you have any inflammatory skin conditions, such as eczema, rosacea, or psoriasis.
Is There Any Downtime?
Some may wish to take a day to let any inflammation subside. Typically, downtime for recovery from a dermaplane facial is not necessary which makes it an extremely convenient treatment. While it can take a few days to get full results, your skin may appear brighter later the same day.
